"Swell" used to be a common all-purpose adjective meaning "good, great, wonderful, fabulous," etc., used by people of all ages, social backgrounds, economic statuses, and education levels innumerable times a day--at least in the USA--but its use has faded considerably over the years, being replaced by a variety of other, more trendy expressions.

Wodehouse was a swell guy and a swell humorist who wrote a bunch of swell books and also wrote a lot of swell song lyrics, including the classic "Bill," from the swell musical "Show Boat," which became the theme song for a swell singer named Helen Morgan and is still performed today by many other swell singers, usually female.

Females named Bobby Wickham, Corky Pirbright, Stiffy Byng, Rosie M. Banks and Honoria Glossop skip through the pages, but my all time favorite Wodehouse Heroine is Emerald Stoker.

Smallminded people are quick to grab at the latest bit of pop news, ignoring more solid, factually grounded developments.

Developments became apparent in fits and starts but all indicated that the situation was still critical.

Management often strives to appear reasonable, but in truth, its efforts tend to be opposed to those of labo(u)r.

Conservatives, particularly working class conservatives, often work against their own self interest as tools of the ruling class.

Screwballs are probably the most difficult pitch to hit and are a nightmare for catchers.

London Bridge (well, one of several London Bridges, this one dating from 1831) now sits in the planned community of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where it attracts a lot of tourists.

Tourists flock in the city every season, foreigners come to cook their traditional cuisine, festivals boom, it's a silent and reticent place where in the night everybody goes to dance - a lovable, inspiring city, where the workforce takes it easy…
