My eighteen year old nephew stayed over last Friday night. He left before I got up. A couple of hours later, I noticed several of my dvds were missing so I text him to ask if he 'borrowed' any. He said he had and forgot to tell me.

So, am I right to be annoyed he took a number of my films without asking or do I just figure he's eighteen, he's an idiot and not worry about it?

You need to call him out on it. Borrowing without asking is stealing. It doesn't matter whether or not he 'forgot'.

If someone doesn't start teaching him accountability right now, he'll never learn. He has to be responsible for his own actions.

Yes you are right. Your next step must be to explain to him, in reasonable tones, that taking things without permission shows a serious lack of respect for other people. And if he doesn't accept that, beat the crap out of him.

Alas, one of the films was Dawn Of The Dead which REALLY pissed me off. Nobody messes with my zombie films.

I'll have a word with my sister. She's much scarier than I am.

Uh, people don't 'borrow and forget to tell'. That's weak.

Besides, being annoyed is always the best plan. Keep people feeling like they owe you one!

The problem is I have a lot of films so it's hard to see what's missing other than DOTD, The Descent and at least three others. My sister-in-law borrowed three but the difference is she asked. If he had asked, I wouldn't care he had them (although I'd want DOTD back within 24 hours).

If my nephew had done that I wouldn't be bothered in the slightest, but that's just me. I know he'd return them, not sell them down the pub. Maybe yours would have remembered to tell you, only you texted him before he could?

Of course, at 18 he should have had enough sense and good manners to ask you first. Maybe he'll learn from this. On the one hand you'd like him to behave like an adult, on the other hand you're going to tell his mum. :)

At that age, everything is theirs. I would be annoyed, but I wouldn't be surprised. At least he didn't say, "No...what are you talking about?" There's a difference between, "I can borrow whatever I want" and, "Hey cool, I just got me some new DVDs!"

Tell him not to take without asking again...or at least leaving a note if he's taking when you're not there. Chalk it up to finding out teenagers are so self-obsessed that they think they're doing us favours when they borrow our stuff without asking.

Believe me, a bollocking from my sister and he won't do it again. If that saves him from doing the same thing with someone else who might deck him for it, that's OK with me.
