Taps/Day is Done

Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light;
And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

For mine in active service... Be safe, Todd. Bless you, Kate.

And for Sgt. Zachary D. Tellier, killed in action on September 29th, 2007.

I'd just like to point out that YESTERDAY was Veteran's Day.

November 11.

The 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, that sort of thing.

Today is merely the OBSERVANCE of Veteran's Day -- dDesigned simply so our overworked government employees can have a three-day weekend.

Exactly right.

The good thing is, it gives us two days to remember.

I have my flag out.

I have mine out today - and every day.

NOTE: My statement was not made - as some said - in oneupmanship but in truth.

I fly my flag everyday because I am the wife of a veteran, the daughter of a veteran (who happens to live up the street), the granddaughter of multiple veterans, and so forth.

I love America; I am also a descendant of immigrants. In fact, all of my ancestors fall into one of two groups - immigrants who arrived in the latter part of the 19th century and those who were in America even before it was a nation.

In no way was my comment meant to be "oneupmanship" and I am sorry that it was taken in that fashion. It was meant to compliment shadow ferret's choice to fly a flag today because to me, every day is a day to salute our veterans.

In fact, I am saddened and disappointed that anyone would take the remark in that way but hey, it's Monday and it isn't the worst thing ever said to me here.

I put my complete trust in those who feel the fear of conflict and stand tall to defend everything we tend to take for granted. I also give them my complete gratitude. I am indebted to each and every one. I hurt for each one who suffers. I mourn those who make the greatest sacrifice.

My gratitude also goes to the families of our heroes--who are heroes in their own right.

I served a long time ago, and I'm proud of it.

Here's to Dad, not in the best of health, but too dadgum stubborn to give in to weakness. WWII Navy man, served on a submarine, the Greenling, in the Pacific.

When I was a kid, I asked him if he'd seen the Hollywood sign through the periscope. He said, "Dude, if we'd seen the Hollywood sign, we'd have been going the wrong way!"

Alas, the poppies have been forgotten, perhaps also In Flanders Field ....

www.donaldmichaelplatt.com

I haven't forgotten the poppies nor have my kids. We buy them whenever we see veterans selling them although come to think of it, we did not see any when we were out and about over the weekend.

My grandfather - a Navy vet - always bought them for me and I taught my kids early to do the same.

They're not gone - just one example from this year in the Dallas area -

V.F.W. Goes Over the Top on Poppy Sales

V.F.W. Post 2494, the Ladies Auxiliary and Junior Girls thanks all those in the Irving and Grand Prairie area for helping not only reach the $10,000 goal in the annual Buddy Poppy drive but surpassing it with a total of $10,403.67.
“The generosity of our citizens for our hospitalized Veterans and others in need is greatly appreciated,” V.F.W. president Marge Hoenig said in an e-mail. “Also thanks to the merchants that allowed us to collect at their stores.”

All proceeds will be placed in the Post & Auxiliary Relief funds.

I have a profound respect and gratitude for the service men and women fighting for the ideals of this country, for the constitution, for the freedoms Americans take for granted.
Their sacrifices are not in vain nor will they be ever forgotten.

I'm not leaving out the Canadian veterans, or other veterans who fought bravely and valiantly. I just live here in the states...

I have many, many friends who are Airborne, Marines, a few Navy Seals (crazy buggers!!!) and I worry for them everyday. They are my heroes.

The one and only poem my father ever wrote was on Veteran's Day about 10 years ago when (with a lot of work with the VFW) they had completed a list of all soldiers (residents of the county) who died in every war (I believe dating back to WWII) and had the names of the fallen soldiers placed on large stone pillars and placed on the courthouse lawn.
The dedication ceremony of the monuments (which required a great deal of research, time and fund raising), with the gun salutes and taps being played caused my dad to cry.
That's what he wrote about.

(soon as I get home after work, I'll find it and post it for all.)
