Behind you! Boo.
Can anyone suggest some good literary magazines for the emerging writer? There are about 10 - 15 that I regularly read (of the MO Review, Ploughshares, McSweeneys, New Letters, Glimmer Train variety), but it seems that very few feature previously unpublished authors. Maybe one per issue, at best.

Provided that the writing is good enough, do any "emerging writers-friendly" publications come to mind? Or some that have issues for emerging writers on a semi-regular basis?

Thanks.

Check out Duotrope.

In the top menu, check out "curious" it lists the top 25 most open markets, as well as the top 25 most difficult.

Pretty much all magazines are "emerging writer friendly." The reason so few previously unpublished writers appear is precisely because their writing isn't usually good enough. Writers who have been published before are also the most likely to be published again because they write considerably better than most new writers.

But you need to remember that every last one of those previously published writers was once an unpublished writer, and had to break in just like you want to do.

If the writing is good enough, and right for the magazine, almost any magazine out there will accept your story. If the writing isn't good enough, or isn't right for the particular magazine, it won't be accepted anywhere.
