Death of Superman (the recent one, not the one from a few years ago). It's...decent. Weird take, but Jerry O'Connell is a good enough VA Superman they might as well cast him in the live action version.

A Star is Born. Same story, new music. I like it better than the Barbra Streisand version. Both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper gave great performances. Plus an adorable fluffy dog (apparently his real dog, not a pro).

netflix rental. enjoyed it. first movie in a LONG while that I actually sat thru. also, i think it was the first good movie to realistically portray ASD. she had some of the basic things (meltdowns, strict schedule, eye contact)...but she had something MORE!!! showing a whole other side of us. i seriously extremely recommend this movie!

First Man -- Terribly constructed, disjointed, desperately boring series of events set to distracting, endlessly swelling music.

Black Sheep (2006). The horror comedy from New Zealand, not the Chris Farley thing... the premise is absolutely ridiculous, but the movie itself is surprisingly well done and really funny.

The Frighteners (can't believe I hadn't seen it!). Cute, pretty standard fare for the period.

[ETA: It felt like they couldn't make up their mind whether they wanted to be another Ghostbusters or something more serious, and the seams sometimes showed.]

Drag Me to Hell. Pretty much average, there were flashes of vintage Raimi but overall it bogged down in a few too many places.

[ETA: I wound up stopping about 2/3 of the way through.]

Not quite a movie, but the latest Rifftrax DVD short collection, The Walking Shorts. I like them because you can start or stop them whenever without committing to a full movie's worth of time. I'd seen some before, but a few were new to me. As typical, they're good for a quick shot of humor.

Thanks to(?) a bout with a 48-hour stomach bug and recovery time on the couch with <1% of normal energy becasue not eating will do that to you, I watched movies.

Netflix:
Erementari. Basque legend about a blacksmith who traps a demon. Really excellent in all respects. Available in dubbbed (gack) versions or subtitled (yay!). Highly recommended.

Corbin Nash. RUN LIKE THE WIND. So bad it wasn't even point-and-laugh bad. I could feel brain cells dying even as I fast-forwarded through most of it.

The Mansion. Eh.

Terrifier. Once I realized it was going to be torture porn, I bailed. If you skeeve clowns, avoid.

The 3rd Eye. Thought it wasn't going to involve small children. Wrong. I bailed.

Chernobyl Diaries (again). Could've been so much better.

The Rift. Odd little movie that tries hard. Doesn't know if it's SF or horror. Worth a watch.

AMC:
The original Halloween. Just as much fun the 12th(?) time.

Prime:

We Are Still Here (again). One of the better haunted house movies I've seen. Marvelous attention to detail. A few jump scares, but doesn't rely on those. Highly recommended.

So my kid signed me up for AMC A-List (up to 3 movies/week at AMC theaters for $20/month) in August, which has given me the chance to go to 21 movies in a little under 2 months. This is how I'd rank what I've seen (alphabetical within category, and includes 5 re-released Disney movies).

Just terrific:
Assassination Nation
Beauty and the Beast (live-action version)
The Hate U Give

Liked a lot:
Bad Times at the El Royale
Crazy Rich Asians
Searching
A Simple Favor

Worth matinee price (or A-List reservation):
Blackkklansman
Cinderella (live-action)
The Equalizer 2
The House with a Clock in Its Walls
Moana
Night School
Operation Finale
The Princess and the Frog
Smallfoot
The Spy Who Dumped Me
Tangled

Eh:
Disney's Christopher Robin
Halloween
A Star is Born

One of the "opening in select theaters" for The Hate U Give was near my apartment. My mom and I went to see the movie after each having read the book and crying at it, both times. We sobbed at the movie opening night. The theater was packed and the entire theater gasped at a part near the end, and a lot of people started sobbing. Pointing this out because I was a little worried I'd be the only emotional one, but, no. It was a really well done adaptation.
