Certainly isn't mine.

Mostafa Tabatabainejad, a UCLA student, was repeatedly stunned with a Taser and then taken into custody. Community Service Officers had asked Tabatabainejad to leave the library after he failed to produce his BruinCard during a random check

As Tabatabainejad was being dragged through the room by two officers, he repeated in a strained scream, "I'm not fighting you" and "I said I would leave."

According to a UCPD press release, Tabatabainejad went limp and refused to exit as the officers attempted to escort him out. The release also stated Tabatabainejad "encouraged library patrons to join his resistance." At this point, the officers "deemed it necessary to use the Taser in a "drive stun' capacity."

"He wasn't cooperative; he wouldn't identify himself. He resisted the officers," Young said.

Neither the video footage nor eyewitness accounts of the events confirmed that Tabatabainejad encouraged resistance, and he repeatedly told the officers he was not fighting and would leave.

Tabatabainejad was walking with his backpack toward the door when he was approached by two UCPD officers, one of whom grabbed the student's arm. In response, Tabatabainejad yelled at the officers to "get off me." Following this demand, Tabatabainejad was stunned with a Taser.

During the altercation between Tabatabainejad and the officers, bystanders can be heard in the video repeatedly asking the officers to stop and requesting their names and identification numbers. The video showed one officer responding to a student by threatening that the student would "get Tased too." At this point, the officer was still holding a Taser.

I don’t understand the thread title. What does police misconduct have to do with the Patriot Act?

UCLA Police Chief Karl Ross said the officers decided to use the Taser to incapacitate Tabatabainejad after he went limp while they were escorting him out and urged other library patrons to join his resistance.
Mavrick Goodrich, a chemical engineering major who observed the incident, said Tabatabainejad shouted, "Am I the only martyr?"

"Uh, yeah, actually you are the only 'martyr'. I'm trying to study for midterms. Bring your I.D. next time, moron. Good luck in your Jihad against student I.D.'S."

Tabatabainejad's attorney, Stephen Yagman, said his client refused to show his ID because he thought he was being singled out because of his Middle Eastern appearance.

I'm glad he admitted that he refused to show his I.D. That's problably where the "personal responsibility" portion of this show is located.

Not much more to say then let's see where the investigation goes and if the officers need to be disciplined for using too much force or if they followed the proper procedures.

I look forward to hearing the outcome.

You, green boy quit laughing or I’ll tase your butt. Where’s your ID, you look like some sort of terrorist to me!

apparently asking for a badge number can get you a threat to get tasered as well.

Nice
I'm going to be really dumb and ask...where did you get that piece of info from?

Most badges have the number embossed on them, or at least the one's I have seen.

So it's okay with you guys, then, for people to be tasered and arrested for being in public without any identification? At least, if they're brown?

Charming.

I'm not sure what a taser is, I'm assuming it's some sort of shocking device.........

Are all students put through this treatment when they don't carry their ID card?

We're teaching our kids that brute force is ok, even for the most trivial things.

Wonderful.

I really don't know what the hell UCLA police officers were doing asking for student IDs at the library anyway. As far as I know, UC libraries are open to the public, and anyone can use them, whether they're students or not. At least that appears to be how it works here at UC Davis, and how it should work. You can't check out books unless you're a student, staff member, or otherwise eligible for a card, but you can certainly visit the library and use the resources within the library.

I'm not trying to justify using a taser on anyone, but...I have to believe that there is more to the story than just what is shown on the UTube clip. The police don't just walk in and ask for your ID and taser you if you don't have it.

Provocation. That's the key to the missing lock on this story. We have Utube (reliable source, I'm sure) and a few disparate accounts. The facts remain somewhere between the point of initial contact and what is available from the media source.

For all we know he (could have) made remarks about having a bomb or blowing up the library.

Does anyone have all the facts here?

ETA: Sounds like he was trying to provoke an incident.

He didn't even need to say that. Next time a policeman stops you for a traffic stop, tell him to go screw himself and not give him your DL. Any guesses on what will happen?
