Washington – The Supreme Court on Monday tossed out disputes claiming former President Donald Trump was profiting from the presidency through his continued financial interest in his private company in violation of the Constitution's emoluments clause.
The high court sent the cases, brought by a government watchdog group and the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia, back to the lower courts with instructions to dismiss them as moot, as Mr. Trump is no longer in office, and vacated the opinions against him.

So, let me get this straight. You can't charge a sitting president. And once he leaves office you can't charge him for his crimes in office? We are fucking doomed.

It certainly isn't encouraging from the standpoint of the constitutionality of holding an impeachment trial in the Senate for an out of office president.

Remember, impeachment is not a criminal trial. If/when they get to the part of denying him the right to run for office again, that might be something Trump can challenge in court, I'm not sure.

This is crazy. Talk about your catch 22.

My whole take away from the Trump Presidency is that if a sitting POTUS is of the same party as both houses, or even as one of both houses, there is absolutely nothing we can Constitutionally do to stop them from doing whatever they want.

Anyone else starting to feel like we're at that scene in the movie after the big fight where the one guy stands up, dusts himself off, flashes a thumbs-up and cocky grin like everything's fine... then takes two steps and collapses from the multiple bullet holes in the back?

The guy is America, and this is one of those bullet holes...

If it's true that we have created an office that is literally above all law and reach forevermore, the dream of "all created equal" is pretty much DOA, and it's just a matter of when, not if, they do away with the trappings and create the actual untouchable dictator-for-life.

Worse than that. The case was brought to court in 2017, shortly after inauguration. It took 4 years to get it to SCOTUS which is as long as a POTUS term, which defeats the purpose. Might as well strike out that rule from the constitution.

POTUS. Now open for business.
