Okay, the article said "animal faeces." Evidently these marauding hornets don't like dining in places covered with poop. Unfortunately bee populations in North America have yet to develop this, or other, adaptations that keep these predatory insects at bay.

I wonder if this strategy would work against human home invaders, not to mention those pesky door-to-door solicitors? I'm pretty sure if I were a burglar casing homes I'd pass on one with manure smeared all over the doors and windows.

I always wonder how an adaptation this starts, since gathering dung isn’t something honeybees have been observed to do before this?
