CBS News said:
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act. The late-night court filing came on the same day the government reported that close to half a million people who lost their health insurance amid the economic shutdown have gotten coverage through HealthCare.gov.

The administration's legal brief makes no mention of the coronavirus.

Overall, some 20 million Americans could lose their health coverage, and protections for people with preexisting health conditions also would be put at risk if the court agrees with the administration in the case, which won't be heard before the fall.

The information on new sign-ups for health coverage comes from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The figures are partial because they don't include sign-ups from states that run their own health insurance marketplaces. Major states like California and New York aren't counted in the federal statistics.

An estimated 27 million people may have lost job-based coverage due to layoffs, and it's unclear what — if anything — they're turning to as a fallback. People who lose employer health care are eligible for a special sign-up period for subsidized plans under the Obama-era law. Many may also qualify for Medicaid.

The Trump administration has been criticized for not doing as much as states like California to publicize these readily available backups. In response, administration officials say they've updated the HealthCare.gov website to make it easier for consumers to find information on special sign-up periods.

Thursday's report from the government showed that about 487,000 people signed up with HealthCare.gov after losing their workplace coverage this year. That's an increase of 46% from the same time period last year.

I suspect we’ll see much more of this kind of thing as it becomes increasingly obvious that Biden will win, and perhaps even take the White House with a Senate majority. This is the GOP’s chance to burn shit down before that, and they’ll take it.

But, but... folks who lose their job have the option of COBRA, so what's the problem? :sarcasm

(For folks outside the US, COBRA permits you to remain on your ex-employer's health insurance* for up to six months... if you pay 100-102% of the premiums, which tend to run between $450 and $2,500/month, depending on your location and whether you have a family). It's a cruel joke.

*IF your employer even offered health insurance, and IF you were already on the plan at the time your employment ended.

Assuming their employer offered insurance. :tongue

(Okay, sorry, I replied before your edit.)

Yeah, COBRA is a pretty miserable thing. Offering a laid-off worker COBRA as a "benefit" seems like offering a thirsty man in a desert a glass of salt water. Yeah, technically it's "water", but...

Ralph's side of the island.
So is this more obsession with revenge on Obama? Or does the idiot think his alt-right base is still on the same page they were on four years ago?

I think the former is the primary reason, and the latter is his secondary reason.

Then there is the third option, there's corporate influence and money involved in ending the last remnants of the ACA.

It's hard to say how Trump's base will react to this, even if it hurts them. The relationship between the White working class and the GOP kind of reminded me of the relationship between an abused spouse/romantic partner and their batterer, even before Trump came along. They may hate what their partner does to them, and they may even cry and complain about it to sympathetic ears, but they won't accept anyone else's criticism of their beloved. Like the lady who was tearing up in an interview back in 2017, because her husband would lose his cancer coverage if the GOP successfully repealed the ACA, but "she still is glad she voted for Trump and thinks he's a 'good man.'"

Heck, they might even shoot someone who intervenes or tries to defend them from their abuser.

Logic dictates that Trump needs more than his base to win, even with the electoral college. Logic also dictated he couldn't win in 2016, since he'd alienated pretty much everyone who wasn't a White male, yet White women voted for him too (except for the most educated), and more Latinos voted for him than had for Romney, in spite of his malignant racism. It's way too early to be sure how things will go in November, or to know what cards Trump and the GOP will play if he (and they) lose.
