I downloaded Trelby a few days ago and really like it, but I’m having a major issue with it. I can’t seem to bold, italicize, copy, cut, or paste anything even when I click “copy”, “paste”, etc. What am I doing wrong?

Late answer, sorry. Others have asked this previously!

I downloaded the program and fiddled about. There's no way I can see to apply italics or bold to sentences or words. I also tried underlining something in Word and pasting it into the script, nope the formatting is lost, plain text only.

The Trelby manual (https://www.trelby.org/assets/manual.html) suggests there is. Like, search for italics, and it says do this. But, no, that will not work, the options are not there.

Trelby is a freebie, I don't think it's supported, I think it might have been abandoned, sorries. But it's still good for screenwriting, if you can do without the extra formatting.

You can set up full elements to display italics or bold, but it's by element not by word. If you need italics or bold in a screenplay, the best work-around (that I know about) is to export to Fountain and load your screenplay into 'Afterwriting (https://afterwriting.com/), mark your italic and bold words (*italic* **bold** ***bold-italic***) and print to PDF from there. (Both Trelby and 'Afterwriting default to A4, so check for that if you want Letter size paper.) Good luck. I've done quite a bit of customizing of Trelby. I like it a lot.

A short video on "themes" in Trelby. I use Courier Screenplay for both display and PDF fonts...

The yellow theme (not included in the above video)...

Also you can set up screenplay settings (Letter, Bold headers, Double space, etc.)

Another option is, write in Trelby, but also download KIT Scenarist (free) at...
https://kitscenarist.ru/en/index.html

Or WriterSolo (also free, online or install on your computer)...
https://writersolo.com/#2HTF6~***~branch=-

Both of these can exchange scripts with Trelby, both will allow you to use italic or bold fonts.
