I know with so many people now telecommuting and schools switching to online classes, internet usage is going to be very high. I usually just goof around, watch videos etc online. I want to do my part to lessen the strain and possible overload. Anything I should do beside, not spend so much time doing basically nothing but surfing around?

I know videos use a lot and I can give up a lot Youtube surfing.

Don't worry about it, except in terms of local use (i.e. for your household; don't be the user who takes all the bandwidth for your home/apartment/building, if you wifi provided by a landlord).

Your ISP/provider has tools to both throttle (reduce the amount of data per second) or shape traffic (decide to allow some kinds of traffic but not others).

The first thing that most ISPs will do is restrict traffic to/from porn sites that aren't paid traffic. This is a solid technique that's been used in other kinds of disasters on a local level. We know this works.

But I think a lot of you for worrying about this.

While I don't anticipate this being a problem, I am also ready to actually put in the DVDs I used to buy. For a dozen years or so, when I was sure I'd want to see a movie a second and third time, it made sense to buy it, especially when it went on sale. I bet lots of us have some of those around. (And if you have none, holler and I'll mail you some on loan.)

I was in my MLS program around 2003'ish, and even then, about half of the students in the program were doing it online, via WebCT, although we always had the option of traveling to campus for specialty electives that were worth the hassle. It was a way to pursue an advanced degree while keeping a day job-- and graduating without debt. :) Just throwing the data point out there to show that online schooling has been A Thing for at least 20 years now...

A friend is making an Elizabethan costume for another friend, so I'm pitching in by beading the forepart for her. In the meantime, I've been watching a lot of DVDs that I'd bought years ago but never got around to watching, and absorbing the elements while I work. I'm normally more of a reader than I am a movie or tv watcher, so it's been nice reaching outside my usual influences. And I have the added bonus of having a completed sewing project done for a worthy cause whilst simultaneously processing stuff like plot and characterization and pacing and such.

I used to support WebCT. We used it for our LMS at UCLA in 1998 on, before switching to other equally Not Great LMSs.

Even then I was gnashing my teeth because there were better, cheaper, options.
