Kirkus Review: John Irving Receives Canadian Citizenship
He's on The National now and says it was because of his love for his wife more than because he hates Trump, but he does hate Trump. He also appreciates that in Canada people speak out against homophobia and related biases. It's not that such biases don't happen in Canada but he believes when they do, people speak up.
With his sons now grown, Irving and his wife decided to move to Toronto, trading apple pie for…poutine, we guess? At any rate, the author isn’t giving up his U.S. citizenship, partly because he wants to continue speaking out against President Trump.
“I don’t want anyone in my birth country to be able to say, ‘Well, he’s moved to Canada. He’s not one of us.’ Oh, yes, I am,” Irving said.
