Australia.
(I wasn't sure whether this should go here, or in Good News. But then I thought it would only be good news if people listened. So it's here. But hey - what an advocate that man is!)

Ralph's side of the island.
It definitely belongs in this forum.

This is a preview of what is to come everywhere water sources are threatened (that is a lot of places). Glaciers that provide water for many communities are melting. Aquifers are being depleted faster than they are being refilled and they are at risk of being ruined by contamination from things like fracking wastewater.

And the biggest threat in addition to overuse and global warming is commercialization of water.

Again, I am taken by how similar our two countries are in some ways--particularly with regards to the refusal to respect and listen to its native people and the mismanagement of naturally dry environments.

This is a very relevant issue in our times. The western US faces many of the same issues as Australia does regarding water, drought, overgrazing, raging fires and (when the rain does come) torrential floods and erosion.

The rest of the country is laughing and pointing at us in CA, where (in spite of the rolling blackouts) a portion of our state burns yet again. They seem to think we specifically brought it on ourselves, which is ludicrous. These environmental issues are a consequences of mistakes made at every level of society and government, just as are the worsening hurricane seasons, floods, and tornado outbreaks that affect other parts of the US--not to mention the famines, disease outbreaks, and droughts affecting other parts of the Globe.

And we want to dig up more oil and plunder more water and ignore the protests of the people whose sovereignty is being ignored in these decisions.

We all need more people with wisdom like Bruce Shillingsworth's.

And if farmers don't like paying to buy back the water that runs right by them, wait 'til the commercial water barons find out they can get a bigger profit by loading tankers with water and selling it overseas.

In B.C., a previous, business-oriented government made a deal with Nestle: you know those over-priced bottles of water? Nestle is getting it for pennies, when it could be running through our ecosystem. Apparently even Nestle was embarrassed at the low price they were paying.
