Hello, everybody!
I go by Ubriel (YOO-bree-uhl) and only recently got permission to say hello. In 3D life, that would sound way odder than it does here. Somehow, online it seems almost correct.... Permission to say hello...
Anyway, in regards to the helpful little list of things to put in the intro post:
• What genres do you write?
I write a great deal of Sci-fi and Fantasy. Everything from one-pagers to the 1k page neighborhood, depending on how long it takes to tell the story. I also occasionally become inspired to write something I don't know the genre of... I call it twisted life fiction. Most of those have some kind of real life bent, a non-traditional romance or a spiritual epiphany or some similar just human story. Occasionally those turn into sci-fi or fantasy.
• What do you like to read?
I like to read anything with amazing characters and an ending that is logical but uniquely crafted for this particular story, like a quilt. It is like all other quilts made of bits of this and that but the bits are remnants of specific and unique blankets fitted together in a way that is unlikely to be quite the same as any other. I don't get the chance to do that much these days. I am hoping to be able to volunteer to Beta-read on here and get some good and unique entertainment.
I am a legal code editor by day. Legal code is not a good story, not entertaining and often not remotely good grammar. But the spelling is always right.
• How long have you been writing?
I have been crafting stories since well before I learned to read and write. I am the oldest of nearly a dozen grandchildren in my family and often would end up being the one telling the bedtime story. I got in more trouble for scaring the little ones... Anyway, I cried so hard when I started kindergarten and they said they didn't intend to teach me to read that year; so the teacher took a little extra time and taught me alone. I started writing that summer. It was not very good. I got better!
• Do you beta read?
If you hand it to me, I will read it. In my day job, I am expected to read and edit ALOT of pages in a single day. If I can make that quota and pay attention to that material, I have confidence that I can read even the roughest draft and make helpful commentary.
Yes.
• Do you have any particular hobbies? Are you expert in any particular field or craft?
I am a two-time graduate of Florida State University. I hold a Bachelor each in Political Science and Neuro-psychology with a minor in Japanese language and culture and a certification in statistical analysis. These have been very helpful in my writing, but pretty much nowhere else. I love roadtrips, kayaking, off-trail wilderness hiking, camping and fishing. I recently took up roller-blading (I am over 40) and I occasionally paint or sketch or take obscene numbers of photographs. I love the beach but I am about as sick of the muggy hot weather in Florida as anyone is allowed to be before becoming homicidal. I am seriously considering moving somewhere that there is snow on the beach.
About my writing, in brief, there is alot of it. Most of it is in over-stuffed outline form but I love all of my concepts that made it that far and fully intend to transform each and every one into the book it was always meant to be... one day. I tend to give away anything that is under 200 pages as free downloads or handouts to anyone who might enjoy a brief distraction. The longer ones, the ones that I have revised and worried over and dreamed about; those I intend to raise up to support me in my old age.
Nice to meet you!
