Oh God, now Dan Simmons has had an incredibly mean-spirited go at Greta. Never have heroes (or just pick your favourite creators from those who died young). This one’s physically painful.

Well, there's another name off the "I really should get around to reading them someday" list...

(Yeah, I know, "product of a different era" and classic works of SF and all that, but some things, once learned, cannot be unlearned. The aftertaste lingers...)

Of course, none of this is about her being a strong, young female challenging power structures and social norms traditionally dominated by older males. It's just ordinary political sparring, the kind of intellectual debate they'd use with any of their colleagues, and says nothing about them taking her very existence as a threat to their tiny, fragile, poorly-functioning and unappealingly shriveled "egos."

I thought “Hyperion” was brilliant. Saddened to learn that he’s a douche IRL.

He spent most of the Obama Administration implying 44 was a socialist and possible secret Muslim. And his writing shows an occasional weird attitude towards young women. Everyone is welcome to compartmentalize/not-compartmentalize based on preference.

I confess I've not read anything of his from the past 15-20 years, nor am I active on social media. But I gather his rightward turn into... whatever he is now? has been an on-going thing for years? Pity. He did have a way with words, and once upon a time used that skill for good.

And, once again, New Zealand leaves the rest of the world behind:

Tens of thousands of children and adults in New Zealand have stopped work and school on Friday to take part in the country’s third climate strike, billed as the biggest yet and the first display of “intergenerational” action.
More than 40 towns around the country were holding marches with 260 businesses involved, including most of the country’s tertiary institutions.

There are estimates of 170,000 people marching, which is about 3.5% of the population.

The figure of 3.5% is significant: http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world

My home town.

Get a unique view inside (and above) Montreal's half-million climate march

500,000. That's a quarter of the local population walking in the streets. There was nothing to cleanup afterwards. People picked up even the smallest cigarette (or pot in many cases) butts.

Yeah, there is hope.

There's been a group of pretty outspoken (mostly white) guys in SF circles over the past several years who are pretty firmly opposed to the challenges to the status quo their genre is supposed to embrace. They appear to take it pretty personally that there is an increasing diversity of voices writing in the genre and that many regard this as a good thing and want to see more of it. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing he's been a part of this counter movement, or at least been tainted by it.

Having a go at an outspoken, articulate teenage girl climate activist who also happens to have Asperger's syndrome strikes me as a losing proposition, however. Being talented doesn't necessarily mean you can't be an idiot too.

I'm glad the marches got so much traction all around the world. I'm hoping this reminds political candidates everywhere they can't afford to ignore the issue any longer.

I'd never heard of Dan Simmons before his mention here, but today his FB post crossed my twitter feed and, honestly, I was shocked. My (admittedly naive) impression of SF authors is founded on Star Trek (and Gene Roddenberry). People who are forward thinking, earth-friendly, and attuned to the echoes of science.

Why does this Simmons character feel so threatened? Greta T doesn't claim to know more than scientists. Quite the opposite. She is begging people to listen to the scientists. Is it as simple as "she's a girl"? Because that's how it feels to me.

There's a lot of odd psychology there. I suspect it may be because a particular vision of the future portrayed by many SF writers of previous decades no longer reigns supreme in SFF circles. It's not that books of the type Simmons writes aren't still popular. They are. But more people at the table with competing views of what the future might hold could possibly feel threatening to some people who put an awful lot of themselves into their work.

There are also some people who are, in essence, cornucopiests (I can't find out the correct spelling of this word). They believe in science so intensely and blindly they think we don't have to worry about conservation, consumption or anything else because SCIENCE will always stay ahead of whatever it is we are doing to the environment. Note most of these are not actual scientists.

Of course, there's also the thing where some older folks who simply resent being showed up by younger people. And for older men, born in an even more patriarchal era, being shown up by a teenage girl could be especially irritating.

There's also just generic resentment over being "told what to do" and "being made to feel guilty."

I think one tough challenge for liberals in general, and environmentalists in particular, is being the ones that are telling people things they love to do and consume are harmful. I get tired of Vegan preaching, for instance, and I actually know they have some good points. Still, I love eating many of the foods that aren't great for the planet. I've cut way back, but I'd hate to give up my favorite foods completely. And I read an article a while back about how we should give up having companion animals, because they exact a terrible environmental toll. That made me want to just lie down and die...
