Do I need permission to make my own version of a copyrighted book?

I probably already know the answer to this one, but I'm going to ask anyways just to be sure.

Anyways, on to the question: suppose I wanted to write my own version of a story that's already copyrighted - for example, turning a Louis L'Amour Western novel into a gritty 1970s-style cop novel - would I need any sort of permission from the copyright holder?

Yes. And you'd need to consult an attorney who is an IP expert.

But you can certainly use the themes but not the words as inspiration for your own work.

Your work must be unique.
