Hi there, everyone.
I am very happy to have found this forum and am looking forward to connecting with other passionate writers.
I worked with a publisher to release a book in a different genre a while back. Though it got published and was quite the experience, it never felt 'right' because I was writing in a style tailored to what they were looking for, not my own voice.
I am circling back now to write YA Fantasy novels that will feature LGBTQIA characters. I am ace/on the asexual spectrum but have also had romantic feelings and mild interest for both men and women. I feel compelled to lend my voice because there is no clear or identical path from person to person in real life. It is a spectrum and I've noticed there can be crossover and blends of all varieties. Even as an adult I can be confused sometimes and figuring things out is complicated... so I can only imagine what teenagers and young adults are facing in this hard and fast world.
I have always loved fantasy and as a kid reached for anything with dragons first. Anne McCaffery, Garth Nix, Piers Anthony, etc. are among my favorites. There was a series I read when I was about 12 that had a gay couple, and as it was the 90's I had incredibly limited exposure and hadn't seen any form of media that presented characters the way they were in that book. I can't remember the name, but it wasn't a romance novel. It was action and fantasy with a dash of romance that happened to be two men. With shows like Glee and the internet, I'm sure most young folks have had some exposure that wasn't around when I was young. But, while the selection of books with LGBTQ characters as the heroes is slowly growing it has been sadly limited.
I am a conceptual person and would love to have a few buddies that I can bounce ideas off of and help them suss out theirs. That sort of thing comes with time, but if anyone is looking for a creative soundboard/bud feel free to DM me.
