This is a thread open to anyone who wants to start, maintain, or reinforce a writing habit. (It can also be about revision, editing, research -- all writing habits welcome!)

The basic idea is that repeating something daily, even if only for a short time, will build a habit that becomes stronger over time.

It's entirely up to you how much and in what way you participate. Post your goals if you like, or just check in when you can!

Here are some tips:

  • Set achievable goals – I can't stress enough how important this is. To build a habit, doing something is more important than quantity or quality.
  • Keep up the habit as many days in the week as possible – even if it's just a few sentences or a bit of editing. It reinforces the habit and makes it easier to get started.
  • Mix it up – Try different types of goals, different times of the day, different tricks to reward or motivate yourself. A good habit is what works for you, not someone else.
  • Be patient – It takes a long time to build a strong habit and you'll always be facing new challenges. Get used to constantly adapting and you'll be better prepared for whatever problem comes up next.
  • Don't give up because you didn't hit your goal – When you fail to hit your target, your job is figuring out why it happened. That way, you can find ways to get around your roadblocks (and don't be scared of lowering the bar - doing something is better than doing nothing). If you share your stumbles in the thread, others might be able to help out with tips, tricks, and support! And sometimes, it's okay to just take a break for a day or two, or have scheduled days "off". Whatever works for you!

Good luck, and see you on June 1st!

June
I zoned out at the end of May, but things are smoothing out again so I have new plans for June. But I'll start Tuesday the 4th, as I'm clearing up some duties over the weekend after which I'll have freed up a lot of brainspace. So see you then!

Indeed - I do believe that the August thread will be the 2nd birthday for this group. :)

& big thanks to you, Magnus for starting it.

I am likely to be changing my 3 this month. I'll write every day I hope, but it looks like I'm doing one big project, so that will be where the bulk of my time. Maybe I'll do
WIP
R/SC
BP for Big Project
I'll see when it gets down to it.

Happy Gregorian month of June, Happy solar month of Gemmini y'all :)

I'm going to continue with my attempts to add words, any amount, to the WIP every day. May was inconsistent, June looks like it will begin the same way, but I'm trying.

I'm aiming for "something every day" again. Or else if there's a dud day then I can add that "something" to another day.

Perhaps I can get the plot structure done for "The Visitor" by the end of June.

I am kinda eager to start writing again, but there's other stuff to do.

Thanks for staring the thread, Magnus.

This WIP is coming together so slowly. I'm gonna give it one more month.

Goals:
1) Finish drafting WIP
2) Read
3) Post every day

Good luck, everybody! See you in June!

I'm joining this thread again this month after basically dropping off the map mid-May.

My goals for June:

1) Write 250 words on my WIP every day.
2) Spend half an hour each day working on planning my next project.
3) Read a book a week.
4) Be more active here.

Thanks for finding me wandering around June 2018, Magnus!

1. Write or do something every day, toward WIPs, inspiration be damned.
2. Revise, revise, revise
3 Word count whatever
4. Publish the historical, already.
5. Don't beat myself up if I fall below my targets.

I think I will participate this month. My goal is write three or four days a week. Normally, it's write everyday, but with a long vacation coming up that would be hard, so I'm lowering my goal for this month.

Here we are in June with a new set of days to face in our challenge.

My goal is to write at least 500 words every day of my first draft.

Best of luck everyone!

Half term ruined the end of May for me. I've been hanging out with my children and seeing friends and family so haven't done anything for a week, argh.

I'm most definitely in for June.

Goals.

Edit minimum 5 pages a day of my first draft.
Read everyday.

Day 1

651 words on my WIP. I'm really happy with that. I finally managed to get my workspace set back up after it was torn apart for renovations and I can already tell that I'm going to be so much more productive (I now have a desk!!!!).

Didn't do any planning for my next project; I feel like that will be something that gets done during the week when I work.

I read approximately 200 pages of the book I'm working through right now and started a second one.

Day 1

Wrote 832 words
Edited 7 pages
Read a good few hundred pages of The Book of Strange New Things

Gough - excellent start
Ap - well done!
Anna - well done for turning up, I always find it easier to get back into it if I've written at least one line the day before, the zero word days quickly spill into zero word weeks here
Layla - sounds a productive and balanced day
aurora - yay for a desk and work space! I've done a lot of writing at the kitchen table in the past so value my little desk in my bedroom so much now.
Cindy - That's a lot of articles! A productive start :)

Day 1 - 414 words.

(BTW, I'll be gone all week as I'm going on vacation and will only have my phone to post and won't have internet, so if I'm not regularly posting here that's why)

Day 1: 1440

I wrote so many words when I was by myself, but getting some isolation is a rarity.

Anna--so glad to see you hanging with us and adding words! I agree, the day is always easier if you've written something the previous day, regardless of how many words.

Layla--yay!! for words and summer chair time, my favorite.

Pingle--wow, what a great start! I loved The Book of Strange New Things, I'll be curious to hear your thoughts when you finish.

The Second Moon--excellent start to the month, have a good break.

Random Coffee--Woot for that word count! I definitely relate, getting alone time is a rare treat--honestly for me, I'm not usually that productive during those times, too busy enjoying the alone-ness.

Day 2: 544 words
