British/UK equivalent of David Simon?

Having just finished David Simon's Homicide - A Year on the Killing Streets, and being intriuged by his follow-up book, The Corner, I'm wondering if anyone knows of similar books that focus on the UK.

i.e. journalistic style rather than personal memoir; attempting to reflect what life is really like in crime-ridden areas.
