What do YOU Want in a Horror Novel/Story?

I don't need to be necessarily scared to enjoy a horror novel as long it's interesting. For me this would usually involve the paranormal (ghosts, monsters, demons, etc). I also want a lot of tension where my eyes are glued to the page wondering if the main character is going to make it through whatever horrible situation he or she has found themselves in. The main character needs to be intelligent and rational so that whatever misfortune does befall them comes from the powers that be and not their own blunders.

I'm with Earthling-- too many villains (humans, monsters, gods, name it) are either not that unusual or are just plain not frightening.

I want an eerie mood, monsters and forces that are manifestations or representations of psychic or cosmic forces, and I want to feel fear!

Horror is almost a kind of poetry to me.
