The only thing that really took me aback was when a reviewer said my writing was "too formal," because it's the last descriptor I expected. I would never respond to a review but I would really love to know what he meant by that!

My guess would be he didn't connect with the narrative voice.

Like you, I don't believe in responding to reviews good or bad. And while blogging about my first bad review may seem like responding, I tried to keep it about my reaction to this milestone rather than an argument with the reviewer. Whoever it is, they have a right to voice their opinion as much as the readers who loved it.
