"Epic ballads"

I'm thinking of writing an "epic" poem about my Dungeons & Dragons group's characters' adventures. I don't know much about ye olde ballads, and searching for "heroic ballad" wasn't much help - mainly finding stuff on heroic couplets. Anyone have any tips to get me started?
