Thanks everyone!
Booky birthday gifts:
I will be indulging in my love of history, and filling in gaps in my knowledge of pre-Civil War US history with
Heirs of the Founders, about three of the most powerful non-presidents ever: Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun.
I am also the proud and excited owner of the
2018 Best American Short Stories anthology, this year edited by Roxanne Gay. The editor makes or breaks the anthology, and although I have not yet read any of Gay's books (Hunger is on my list), the excerpts and articles I've read have been tops so I'm looking forward to this.
Finally, dropping in to a used bookstore this afternoon, I stumbled upon
Back to Blood by Tom Wolfe. Bonfire of the Vanities is one of my all-time faves, and launched my interest in the contemporary genre (beyond the quirkiness of the Vonnegut I'd been reading before). Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test was amazing, too. However, I was less impressed by A Man in Full and disappointed by I Am Charlotte Simmons, so I've been reluctant to attempt this one. But, at a used-book paperback price I can take the chance.
