France 19:24 Wales
Scotland 33:20 Italy
Ireland 20:32 England

Okay, so the opening games of the 2019 championship have come and gone. France were, well France, squandering a 16:0 half-time lead to lose a game they should have taken by the scruff in the second half. I know the weather was diabolical, but still. (Looks like I wasn't the only one to laugh derisively when the commentators said something to the effect of: "This rain won't suit Wales." Excuse me? Not been in our soggy corner of the world, then?) What worries me is that Welsh supporters will expect too much of that comeback, though.

The Scotland/Italy clash was a bit of a yawn, but the last match... blimey! England looked scarily good and made the Ireland team, the class act of this championship for the last few years, seem very ordinary. At this rate I feel sorry for England's next opponents, France.

I understand France v Wales was at 7:24pm and Ireland v England was 8:32pm, but boy, that's a strange time.

I'm actually glad England won. They played marvellously well in all sectors and were the underdog, totally outplayed the home team and deserved the win.

Sorry, I think you may be operating under a misapprehension. Those numbers are scorelines, not times. I am still scratching my head over how we managed to put 24 points past France in the second half.

I wasn't being totally serious :p
Well France were their own worst enemy that game, weren't they.

Ah, I have always tended to take things literally.

As for France, you never know. I have seen them bounce back and cream presumptive tournament champions, but maybe, when one looks at the trend of their recent results, this time not so much. Still that inherent unpredictability means I am looking forward to the Eng/Fra game.

Wales play Italy away next, a game they should win, and providing things go according to plan, it's an opportunity for them to gather momentum. Lets hope the wheels don't come off.

Rugby is a funny old game.

At the start of the Six Nations, Wales' Coach, Warren Gatland, said if Wales beat France in the opener, they would go on to win the championship. Half-time in the France v Wales game and Wales were down by 16 pts. How many people were sniggering into their pints of Brains S.A. at Gatland's pronouncement then? Wales prevailed and won that match with 25 pts scored in the second half.

Wales beat England, when I didn't think they would or could, and today they came up against Ireland. At half-time, they were ahead by 16pts, but I didn't have any expectations of a calamity and that they wouldn't go on to win. Not sure what happened to Ireland since the Autumn. They were dreadful. The ref might have given Wales the benefit of the doubt on a few debatable penalties, but all those Irish unforced errors. Arghh! (Which is to say if you are Irish, I've been there and I feel your pain.) I know the weather was rubbish, but both sets of lads train in those conditions all the time.

Final score 25:7. Wales 2019 Grand Slam Champions. Fitting send off for Warren Gatland on his final Six Nations game in charge.

This year is a rugby world cup year, so waiting with baited breath to see whether Wales hang on to this level of performance, or if they stuff it.
