This thread is for written works (short fiction, novels, etc.) we loved that were published in 2019, with an eye both towards recommending works to fellow readers and to throw titles in the Community Consideration Hat for next year's awards season.

This is NOT a self-promo spot, so recommendations should not come from those works' authors. Mod has x-ray vision and can see right through your clever self-promo-ing disguise.

If you're looking to nominate for this year's awards, see the 2018 thread.

I'll toss Seanan McGuire's In an Absent Dream (Book 4 of the Wayward Children series) into the ring, here. Like Down Among the Sticks and Bones, this is a "prequel" backstory of one of the central characters, a girl who visits the Goblin Market, where anything can be bought, even friendship and love... if one is prepared to pay the price. Beautiful prose, beautiful (if painful at times) story of a misfit child who struggles to find her place in the world (any world), only to lose it all when she wants too much.

The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden, (Winternight Trilogy #3)

This was a beautifully written conclusion to the trilogy. If you like fairy tales, this is a good trilogy.

The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy #2) by S.A. Chakraborty

A great continuation of the story begun in the first novel, this installment raises the stakes much higher and has many surprises.

I have to second this! Both this book and the first installment (City of Brass) are refreshing and offer delicious twists!
