FWIW, I have been stalked by a person I upset at a website I moderated at the time. Two of us made him angry, but I was closer, so he came after me first. He pieced together little bits of my personal life I'd told various people over the years--the weather one Thanksgiving, a play I'd seen, a store I shopped at--and thought he knew right where to find me.

His wife in Georgia sent an email to his entire contact list saying he'd left home without his medications and with his gun. So the first I heard about it was from mutual acquaintances at the chat. At that point it wasn't clear he was looking for me, but I was still leery.

Anyway, he traveled about a thousand miles and got to within about thirty miles of my home. He was in constant contact with people we both knew at the website, seeking more information about me. Apparently when he determined he couldn't find me, he shot himself in a motel.

So yeah, I will never use my actual location online, and I play pretty close to the vest on revealing personal information online in general.

Good for his wife, to think of warning others! Especially at a time when she was probably worried about her own safety.

This is just the sort of thing you'd expect a Canadian to say...allegedly...
:greenie
Heck, half of Canada sounds like a made-up place:
Tuktoyaktuk, Manitoba, Chilliwack, Punkeydoodles.

If I posted my location as 'Ocean Falls', how many of you would know if it's a real place or not?

1) I confess I left Albany city limits without AW permission at least a half-dozen times in the last month.

2) I also confess I know a person who regularly omits the Oxford comma :rulez, but I try hard to understand  , not overtly shun him :e2paperba, or say bad things :Soapbox: even though I think them. :badthoughts

Writers make stuff up. It's what they do.

And yes, some of us have been stalked. It's not much fun.

Also? Location on the Internet is, at best, a philosophical concept.

Tintagel is a my favourite totally real but sounds-like-I-made-it-up place in BC.

And, there's the Valhalla range of mountains in B.C., that I think of whenever I watch 'Vikings', and Floki is claiming that the gods lead him to his bleak new settlement.

Then there's 'Sointula', settled by Finnish immigrants. Apparently 'Sointula' means 'Place of Harmony' in Finnish, and they planned to set up a utopian socialist community.
They rowed up there from Nanaimo, way down the coast. I suspect that the 'Harmony' was of the "We all agree that we've done enough rowing, eh?" variety.

No stalking issues here. I just like being silly. I don't trumpet my location to the four winds, but I don't go out of my way to hide it if it comes up in the context of a thread.

Honestly I didn't even know I could change my location tag. I'm going to go off and have some fun now.

EDIT: I've changed my location. Wow what a rush.

We've got a town called Intercourof that famous postcard se close to where I live. Changing my location would probably invite stalkers.

I went to college not far from you, and still have a copy of that famous postcard depicting a young Amish couple in a buggy on their way to that very town. :e2brows:

I raised my kids on Paradise Ave - which was just off Darling St. (I have had some brilliant addresses, I really have.)

I'm only a few miles away from a town called Adelaide. Though you've probably never heard of it.
