Destination Nowhere

a novel sleeps on my nightstand
bookmarked to chapter one

the plot not yet revealed
it's difficult to keep my interest
from decaying

it's like buying a ticket
for a flight you don't board
you walk up to the gate
see others with their carry-on luggage
giving their tickets to the attendant
hear that gentle computer bong
that says you can take your seat
then you are struck with a fatal
obsession that the plane will go down
over some unknown part of the world
and there will be no survivors

you really don't mind dying
it's the final adventure after all
but there's that regret
of not arriving at your planned destination

that's what reading a book
that's taking you nowhere
is like
