A Swedish-American girl (named Saga) was wandering by a lake near her summer home when she fished out a Fifth or Sixth century pre-Viking sword. Just an all-around adorable story, and though lots of American kids grew up finding arrowheads when out camping, finding a sword is on a whole other level.

"I was outside in the water, throwing sticks and stones and stuff to see how far they skip, and then I found some kind of stick," Saga told The Local.
"I picked it up and was going to drop it back in the water, but it had a handle, and I saw that it was a little bit pointy at the end and all rusty. I held it up in the air and I said 'Daddy, I found a sword!' When he saw that it bent and was rusty, he came running up and took it," she continued.

Though she didn't get to keep the sword, her school did throw her a party with ice cream. Long may she reign.

(insert Monty Python reference to ladies in lakes handing out swords here)

Does that mean she's a queen now?

Can she come to America? 'Cause our current emperor has some Issues...

This was my exact reaction when I heard this story. Sweden already has a crown princess, and lil' Saga is half-American, so it's a stretch, but...

“Listen, strange women playin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.”

No, but chopping the heads off people has a long and well-documented political history.

Somebody should really check her full lineage. She could be the lost queen of an ancient magical kingdom for all we know.

Or a person without any royal blood who just happens to be favored by the Old Gods.:)

Of course, Saga's got other plans.

However, the eight-year-old's experience hasn't made her want to pursue a career in archaeology, saying she currently hopes to be a doctor, vet, or an actress in Paris, although she does enjoy learning about "old stuff".

I, for one, welcome our new queen of the land. May she reign with a just and true heart!

Sounds like the sword is pre-Viking.

There's a widely shared Indo-European practice of offering large amounts of weapons, particularly, but also other valuables to the gods by discarding the weapons in a deep lake.

Various Norse, Swedish and Danish lakes have been used this way (and large stashes of weapons found). The Celts also did this.

Epic MC name? Check. Perfect start of action? Check. Sounds like the all the variables for a great adventure/fantasy novel.

But, as AW Admin points out, there are many likely lakes full of swords, up in the Northern Lands. Time for a quest, methinks. They may not all be 'swords of power', but, hey, if they'll take an edge, they're still workable.

I think they’re likelier to be ‘swords of crumble’ by this point? The one Saga pulled out looks pretty thoroughly incapable of bashing orcs any more. :tongue

Oh, great - she didn't find Excalibur, she found Excalluper, the embodiment of every late night radio show caller. The thing will talk everyone's ear off about how its corroded, crumbling blade is just a symbol of the corruption running rampant through society and government, and everyone's in the pocket of Big Sword and the Lady of the Lake's part of the Illuminati conspiracy with the reptiloid orcs who control the world currency markets...
