I haven't published anything yet, but i'm almost finished with my series, so i'll be ready to go live soon, and i don't want to be sloppy about this. Apologies if anyone has asked before and i didn't find it--sometimes my search fu crumbles.
When i'm not writing erotica i'm usually writing YA, so i definitely need to protect myself by separating my two pen names. If i had a publisher, i realize they could protect my legal name (and by extension, my YA name), but i will be self-publishing my erotica, so it's up to me. I also realize it's unlikely anyone will even try to hunt down my identity, but i have spoken with authors who never expected to get the level of public attention that they did, so i want to take precautions.
I'm a web designer/developer so i think i have that covered: my site uses shared hosting at a large company and my domains have whois protection. The "photo" of me is an art collage, so no one can throw it into Google image search or that creepy Facebook recognition software. I use Fastmail, so all of my e-mail goes to my domain and when i reply it comes from my domain--no one can see my "real" e-mail address.
I'm more worried about taxes, how to get payment into my bank account, and pitfalls that i didn't even realize i'd come up against. What have you done to protect your identity? What worked and what didn't?
Thanks for helping out!
