I am currently a high school senior in a STEM school who wanted to become a scientist. Through my high school experience I have learned that I have no aptitude at all for research in STEM (except maybe Computer Science) and instead have been complimented during freshman year by my teachers for my creative writing abilities. Since then I've become the editor of my school's newspaper and literary journal while also attending some writing workshops for poetry and short story. Due to the nature of my school and having been forced to continue with STEM classes, my teenage years have been quite miserable. But I believe my background and knowledge in scientific topics (as well as the misery of high school itself) has assisted my writing (as all angst seems to do) so I am grateful.
I will probably pursue both English (creative writing or literature) and Computer Science in college. If anyone has done something similar or pursued any of these two advice would be helpful!
My dream is to one day write a novel. Not even a bestselling one, but just a traditionally published one. And eventually from that write more and more, until there are no stories left in me. I have all these stories in my head (in genres of sci-fi dystopian, postmodern surrealism, and contemporary fiction) that just need to get out for me to be satisfied with life.
I've always read. Sometimes I read too much that I forget to study and fail tests, but in the end I'm just smiling and feel like it's worth it. Experiencing the delight of a story impacts me on a visceral level that no mark on a math test ever will. At my school's library, there is a policy that you can only take 2 books out simultaneously. The librarian, however, knows me and allows me to take out as many as I want because I always return them on time. Sometimes my backpack is filled with David Foster Wallace, Pynchon, Murakami, Orwell, Dazai, and Bradbury rather than the Biology and Chem textbooks I'm supposed to have. They just fascinate me more.
My current project is completing the first draft of my first novel. It is about love, trauma, sadism/masochism, bullying, normies, and societal acceptance.
I would love to beta-read for others. As the editor for my school's publications and through attending the writing workshops that I have, I find great pleasure in reading, critiquing, and learning from other people's work despite never posting on any writing forums before. If you have something that you want a random guy like me to give feedback on I will take the time and try my best and perhaps we can get to talking and even be friends.
Thanks for reading this far ,
Jason
