Look! the round-cheeked moon floats high,
In the glowing August sky,
Quenching all her neighbor stars,
Save the steady flame of Mars.

- August Moon, by Emma Lazarus*

*I chose the poem above to head up this thread because where I live there's been a spectacular full moon for the last couple of nights, with little red Mars keeping her company.

Welcome to the August NaNo thread, where we state our goals for the month - writing and otherwise - and report on our progress while cheering our fellow posters on. Some of us are fresh from the July Camp Nano, with lots of brand new words to our credit. Some of us :):raises hand:: ) had a less than successful Camp, but August is a whole new month and time for fresh starts.

As always, I'll start us off with my goals. The 4th book in my epic fantasy series comes out August 28th, so I'll be doing a fair amount of promo writing to prep for that. Since I only have a couple of small acting gigs, I'm hoping to get a LOT of writing done on the rough draft of the 5th book - so I've set what is, for me, a fairly ambitious writing goal. My gardens are all in wretched shape after a combination of neglect and too much rain, so getting them back in shape is a big goal. And I'm focusing once again on getting some of this stubborn excess poundage off my nether regions.

What's on YOUR to-do list for August?

[ ] Write 20k new words on rough draft of Book 5 - starting count 18,741
[ ] Write ten guest blogs/other promo for Book 4 virtual book tour - 0 of 10
[ ] Exercise at least 2 hours per week
[ ] Week 1
[ ] Week 2
[ ] Week 3
[ ] Week 4
[ ] Week 5
[ ] Lose five pounds - 0 of 5
[ ] Submit a short story somewhere
[ ] Write two blogs for my website - 0 of 2
[ ] Weed gardens - 0 of 2
[ ] Read two books - 1 of 2

I didn't get as much done in July as I'd hoped. I think I was too distracted by the SS:AMNG. But that will be over at some point in the next week, so hopefully August will be better.

[ ] finish knitted sweater (Christmas gift)
[ ] work on The Crystal Throne
[ ] work on expanded map for Lantaria
[ ] finish blasted fanfic
[ ] attempt brandy truffles

Same old, same old goals for me. Minor variations, two shorts edited, dive back into Haven. At least with game planning on the list, I know there will be something I definitely get to tick off.

Reading: I live in eternal hope.

Now off to actually do my writing for the day.

1. Read five books.
2. Continue game planning.
3. Continue transcription.
4. Edit two shorts or flash.
5. Continue Haven.
6. Edit Marietta.
7. Min 500 words OR 2 pages edited per day with one 4hr min day per week.

[ ] Read Book Club book for August
[ ] Release Phantom Echoes

[ ] Edit every day: Week 33
[ ] Edit every day: Week 34
[ ] Edit every day: Week 35
[ ] Go through my kick-knacks for stuff I can give away

Not a bad start to the month. I wrote just over 700 words on Book 5, made some progress on the books I'm reading, and got in about an hour's worth of exercise - different kinds of exercise, too (weights, walking and swimming). Since this was just a partial week I'm going to call that particular weekly goal done.

[ ] Write 20k new words on rough draft of Book 5 - 735 of 20,000
[ ] Write ten guest blogs/other promo for Book 4 virtual book tour - 0 of 10

Well, I've accomplished nothing so far. All my energy was taken up by SS:AMNG, but now that it's over, I'm expecting to get SOMETHING done this week.

[ ] finish knitted sweater (Christmas gift)
[ ] work on The Crystal Throne
[ ] work on expanded map for Lantaria
[ ] finish blasted fanfic
[ ] attempt brandy truffles

Getting along. Nothing finished yet, really, but still getting along. Gotten into the flow with Haven. If I look at pure words, not many, but it feels good. Some transcription, some game (more map), finished a chapter and started another of Marietta. No other editing yet.

Not finished a book, but did lots of reading yesterday (while trying to dry my leaking car... and accidentally running the battery flat in the process *cough*). Reading The Martian (again). Sometimes I feel bad rereading books so soon, but I was prowling around not feeling like reading anything. So if I wasn't rereading, I probably wouldn't be reading at all.

1. Read five books. 0/5
2. Continue game planning. Yes.
3. Continue transcription. Some.
4. Edit two shorts or flash. 0/2
5. Continue Haven. Started.
6. Edit Marietta. Little bit.
7. Min 500 words OR 2 pages edited per day with one 4hr min day per week. Yes.

I re-read all the time, especially when I'm feeling particularly low energy. It's like visiting a trusty old friend.

End of the first full week of August, and it was a trying one. Dead compressor on HVAC system = no A/C in 90-degree temps. Turns out the coil is going, too, so we're having to replace most of the system. We had a parade of estimators through the house all week, finally settled on one bid and now have to wait until Thursday for the installation. (Which I'll have to oversee because the hubs will be out of town.) Meanwhile we bought a small window a/c unit for the bedroom so we can sleep comfortably. We have plenty of box and oscillating fans, so the rest of the house is bearable as long as we keep oven use to a minimum and don't move around much.

The not moving around much part means I got no exercise and did no gardening this week. The prospect of getting hotter and sweatier when I was already hot and sweaty had no appeal. On the upside, I got a fair bit of writing done (most of it on the first sleepless night before we bought the a/c unit) and I submitted a short story. I also decided to use the email addys from my Rafflecopter giveaway entries to start a newsletter (I'm using the free Tiny Letter program), drafted up the first edition which will go out at the beginning of September, and decided on a second promo to start with the release of Book 4 at the end of this month. So in all, while I'm disappointed about the exercise fail, I'm happy with the rest of my progress.

Mrsmig - no air-con when it's so stinking hot is brutal. Kind of makes you wonder how our parents survived, eh?

So... You know how when you have plans for stories you're going to work on, and progress is happening, even if it is rather slow, and then, out of the blue, another idea pops up and grabs you by the throat and won't let go? Yeah, that happened. So I think Crystal Throne is temporarily shelved while I pander to the muse who seems to want a quasi-historical type thing. Hip deep in researching stuff so I can figure out what I can change to suit the story that wants to be written.

Haven't done much knitting either, because I've been fighting a headache all week. Man, I hate winter. I can't wait for shorts and t-shirt weather!

I did accomplish stuff this week, just not the stuff on my list. *g*

[ ] finish knitted sweater (Christmas gift) -slowly, slowly, stitch by stitch
[ ] work on The Crystal Throne - temporarily shelved
[ ] work on expanded map for Lantaria - temporarily shelved
[ ] finish blasted fanfic - crawling along
[ ] attempt brandy truffles - meh. Probably won't even attempt them until next month

Sounds like everyon's doing pretty good. I hate summer too, except for the beach (which I'll get to in a moment).

[ ] 20k on first draft. Pluggin along
[ ] Practice typing five times a week all four weeks. Nope!

[X] Throw the dog a party (it's his anniversary). :partyguy::snoopy::partyguy:

But we ended up celebrating with a trip to the dog beach! What better place to enjoy barking, the hot sun, and wet, sandy dogs everywhere invading your business. Nate had a great time and seemed to find a way to get pet by every pretty lady there.
