I figured this might be handy for some of you. Its a chart showing how long it took to sail to various places from London circa 1881.

And that was after the invention of the steamship, which greatly reduced travel times, as well as making them more predictable because you didn't have to depend on winds.

Exactly. Plus the overland times are by train - note how London to San Francisco was in the 10-20 day zone because of the transcontinental railroad, and how times go up for less-settled areas.
