Exclusive Book Giveaway for Absolute Write Members: THE FORTRESS AT THE END OF TIME

Exclusive Book Giveaway for Absolute Write Members

Win one of five (5) copies of THE FORTRESS AT THE END OF TIME by Joe M. McDermott right here, at www.absolutewrite.com!

Okay, so tell me about the book.

Well, Andrew Liptak at TheVerge.com selected it as one of the best books of 2017, and said, “The Fortress at the End of Time is an essential read, and feels like a throwback to the era of classic science fiction from authors such as Frank Herbert or Ursula K. Le Guin."

Here’s his full review of the book:

    https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/17/1...tt-book-review

    Others had some thoughts:

"McDermott manages to paint a vivid world in a few pages." —The Washington Post

"The story works on many different levels... readers will be sucked in." —Romantic Times

"I can say this, Joe M. McDermott's Fortress at the End of Time is an intellectual bombastic space opera" —Paul Jessup, author of Glass Coffin Girls

"The Fortress at the End of Time is a brilliant novel." —Geek Ireland

"The Fortress at the End of Time will hit all of the right spots with science fiction fans. Fast paced, but incredibly thoughtful, McDermott creates an unforgettable world at the end of the universe." —Teresa Frohock, author of Los Nefilim

"A highly original, completely affecting work." —Mysterious Galaxy

    What’s this book about?

A man desperate to prove himself inherits a watch station with a glorious military past, but no future.

    Here’s the back cover copy:

Captain Ronaldo Aldo has committed an unforgivable crime. He will ask for forgiveness all the same: from you, from God, even from himself.

Connected by ansible, humanity has spread across galaxies and fought a war against an enemy that remains a mystery. At the edge of human space sits the Citadel—a relic of the war and a listening station for the enemy's return. For a young Ensign Aldo, fresh from the academy and newly cloned across the ansible line, it's a prison from which he may never escape.

Deplorable work conditions and deafening silence from the blackness of space have left morale on the station low and tensions high. Aldo's only hope of transcending his station, and cloning a piece of his soul somewhere new is both his triumph and his terrible crime.

Who wrote this, anyway? Who is this guy?

Joe M. McDermott (a.k.a. Badducky. Yep, that's me.) is best known for the novels Last Dragon, Never Knew Another, and Maze. His work has appeared in Asimov’s, Analog, and Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. He holds an MFA from the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast Program. He lives in Texas.

From my interview with Absolute Write:

What made you think of using a monastic system in a universe with clones and an ansible in The Fortress at the End of Time?

"I think too many of the futures that I read about create a strange sense that everyone’s soul is going to the same place when they die, and theological controversies only exist in that they help the plot along or not. Spirituality is such a wild and wooly field of human energy, and I hoped to try and capture a sense that faith and organized religion and atheism and agnosticism will all still be rattling around people’s heads even when we’ve extended our reach into the Sagittarius Cluster."

Wow, that sounds great! How can I get my hands on one of those five copies?

This giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere with a physical mailing address, who can receive a book from the US Postal Service.

Post a comment right here on this thread, and after 14 days, the thread will be locked. This will occur on August 12 at 9:00 AM Central! So, comment when you can!
(Please, only post one comment. Everybody who comments is entered once, no bonus entries for more comments…)

After the cutoff date, the AE & BP room mod will lock the thread and hold a blind drawing by assigning a non-identifying random number to each entrant. A volunteer mod will draw the five random numbers and the room mod will announce the winners in this thread.

These winners will need to supply me with their physical mailing address, otherwise, how can I mail you a copy of a book?

Hey, this sounds really easy and fun, and the book looks like something I want to read. What do I do?

POST A COMMENT NOW TO ENTER THIS CONTEST!

PS: Thanks, to AbsoluteWrite, and the moderators for making this amazing resource possible.

I AM NOT WHAT YOU THINK!
    by Antwon Rose
    5/16/2016

    I am confused and afraid
I wonder what path I will take
I hear that there’s only two ways out
I see mothers bury their sons
I want my mom to never feel that pain
    I am confused and afraid

    I pretend all is fine
    I feel like I’m suffocating
I touch nothing so I believe all is fine
I worry that it isn’t, though
    I cry no more
    I am confused and afraid

I understand people believe I’m just a statistic
I say to them I’m different
I dream of life getting easier
I try my best to make my dream true
    I hope that it does
    I am confused and afraid

This sounds like fun! I love stories that take religion seriously as a category of human experience.
Write the change you want to see in the world!

Writing exposition is like putting red pepper flakes on your pizza - the occasional burst adds depth and flavor, too much in a lump can burn the reader out.

    Wish Me Away

Ours is characteristically the kind of if-it-isn't-this-it-has-to-be-that, dichotomized, either/or thinking that philosophers from earlier times have cautioned can lead to a simplistic misreading of reality. And, indeed, psychologists today have discovered it is the mark of a lower or less psychologically evolved stage of cognitive and emotional development. - Riane Eisler

Mod Note: We're at the half-way mark for this giveaway. Entries will close Sunday, August 12th, at 9:00 a.m. Central U.S. time . . . or, yanno, shortly thereafter if I'm slow to rise that mornin'.

Drawing process: I'll close the thread, count the entries, and choose a cockamamie number range. I'll randomly assign a number from that range to each commenter; i.e., random, as in it won't be in posting order. Then, I'll ask our kind volunteer mod dpaterso, "Darlin', please choose five numbers between X and X and send 'em to me." Once Derek sends me the five numbers the cosmos inspired him to choose, I'll announce the corresponding winners here. (Lisa will have a copy of my number-to-name matchup so she can make sure I didn't goof in my excitement.)

Winners, you will then need to PM your mailing address to badducky so he can mail your copy to you. (It's the only way we could figure to get your copies to you since the transporter's down.)

    Good Luck, Everyone!

Thank you, Derek and Lisa, for helping out with the giveaway. I really appreciate your help.
