An interesting piece in The Writer, an online mag, from March: "The editor, the excavator." It's about where an editor finds the excitement, the joy, in editing. It resonated with me and I thought you'd like to see this perspective on editing.

Helping a writer to tell – or see – an underlying story is the absolute best part of being an editor.

This is what I find exciting about the editorial part of being a writer too. Those moments when you're walking on what seems like barren land...and suddenly, there's gold!

Oh, yes. Absolutely. This is exactly why I love revision so much. There's gold beneath the surface; it just needs to be brought up. Not only can revision transform the existing story, but it will often unearth the actual story—and that's exciting and energizing.
