GAH!!! What is the word for a person who has forsworn any sort of carnality in favor of devoting their life to meditation and higher thought?

Can anyone help me out?

I guess it depends on which culture you’re in. Christian monks of various sects often took vows of chastity.

There are some differences in terms of context/connotation for chastity and celibacy.

Celibacy often connotes a formal oath.

My brain is aging fast and this happens to me a lot. What I do when I can't think of a word or a name is go immediately online to find it. I usually succeed.

I tried "what monks do" after failing to find anything under 'forsworn carnality' and 'devoted to meditation'.

I found this: "A monk is a person who practices religious asceticism by monastic living, ..."

It might be a lot easier to ask these wonderfully talented writers, I'm not saying not to. Just sharing another option that exercises one's brain as well.
