Agented, published, and no career

I have much respect for E L James in that regard. She is generally philosophical about it or seems to be, on record as saying she knows she isnt a good writer but feels she can tell a good story nonetheless. It would seem she is right.

But then she got mocked for years and years for writing "smut" in her spare time (by co workers) so I imagine she had some practice in shrugging it off.

I second everything that lizmonster said. I hope AW--and especially this board--can remain a "safe" place to vent, because fsm knows we need it.

After reading your post i have a couple of things to say. If you will hear me out. I know it was a bit harsh and downright mean spirited to post what i posted. I know that 'stop feeling sorry for yourself' is like saying to someone who is dealing with depression to "Well cheer up dammit." And i know it was a bit harsh for me to say what i said. But i still stand by what i said. For better or worse. I'm not used to being nice. I'm not used to people being nice to me. But what i found out in life is that persistence is key to success. And that if one avenue closes, another is open. And maybe i'm cold to this because I've never felt the experience of having a bad agent and having a career that you put in so much time and energy for is stagnate to the point it feels like it's being flushed down the toilet. Or maybe I've heard one too many pity parties before in my career working with a debt collector.

Forgive me or not, please understand where i'm coming from.
