As anyone can tell from the avi, I'm a fan of cattle dogs. And while there are plenty of brave, noble, and heroic doggos from every breed, this article kind of shows why.

An old blue heeler named Max remained by the side of a three-year-old girl and led searchers to her after she spent more than 15 hours lost in rugged bushland on Queensland's Southern Downs overnight.

Max is 17 years old, deaf and partially blind.

I'm not crying, I swear. I just got something in my eye...

You know, I'm not a dog person. I've even killed fictional dogs in my work. But damn, this is a good, good dog!

What a great old dog. The poor little girl must have been scared, but I'll bet the dog's company was a great comfort to her.

One of my dogs is a kelpie, and another is a cattle dog/border collie cross. Both are smart and incredibly loyal. Australians made some good dog breeds out there in the bush.

There's also Sophie, who's probably a good poster child for the breed's toughness and resourcefulness.

Hang on I got something in my eye(s) too

This is why I prefer the company of dogs to humans...

Max was already a fairly old dog when she was born. He knew his job and did it.
Good dog, boy, GOOD dog!
(I am normally a cat person, but I can recognize greatness when I see it.)

An update to the story: Max has been made an honorary police dog by the Queensland Police Service. He's QPol's first honorary police pooch.

No, you're crying.
Aww. The QPS are good people. I hope Max serves as an inspiration to other dogs. Yes, I'm getting sniffley, chiefly because when I saw this thread bumped up, I was afraid something bad had happened to Max, out in the land of deadly snakes, spiders and all the other things Australia is renowned for. Glad to know it's good news.
