Hello,

I'm writing a story set in present day Washington state. Two of the main characters are of Japanese descent, one of them has a white mother.

If anyone would be able to share their experience as a Japanese American, I would be highly appreciative! I'm looking for:

  • Examples of racism/microaggressions
  • Annoying misconceptions or stereotypes
  • Western names seem common. I've read that many immigrants took on Western names upon moving to America. Is this true, or is it typical for older generations in your family to go by more traditional Japanese names?
  • How can your representation in media be improved?
  • Any recommendations for books with Japanese American main characters that may deal with these topics?

Thank you so much for your time!

EDIT: I just saw there's a PoC forum buried waaaaay down there. D: I'm going to take a look in that forum, and I apologize if this is a topic already covered to death!
