I hope I am not too late in posting this message. It's just that I'm new, and it takes time to explore the many threads in this forum.
If you read French, you might want to look into the journal called "Clio". In issue n10/1999, there is an article by a historian, Susan Clayton, about "female-husbands". I found this article very interesting when I was doing some research on the subject. She speaks about James Allen, who was the "female-husband" of a woman called Abigail in 1787-1829. Here is the link: https://journals.openedition.org/clio/254 and you can find a summary in English, with many bibliographical notes. The whole issue is about transgender in various periods of time.
