Oh no. For me, he made Ghibli. I can't overstate how important this guy is to the development of my taste not only in anime, but in fiction in general. I was four or five when I watched Heidi - Girl of the Alps, and not much older when I watched 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother. When I look back at childhood cartoons, those are the ones that stayed with me.
At least, his last film was a real winner: Kaguya Hime no Monogatari might be my favourite of his.
But, yeah, Pom Poko might be the perfect film to watch upon his death - just the right mix of upbeat melancholy.
