In this ever-changing market, I'm wondering just what it is that editors are looking for these days. A few years ago it was cozy mysteries; now it seems to be techno-thrillers. Any thoughts? Also, what genres are the "hottest"?

Suspense and romance are always hot. If you're trying to start writing for the hottest genre of the moment, it's good to keep in mind that by the time you finish the book, get an agent and go through the whole publishing process, the market might be already saturated and looking for something different. Besides, you'll always be overshadowed by that one great book that started he trend and it may even be easier to get rejected just because your book turned out a bit too similar to it.

And it depends on the editor. They all have personal preferences on what they'd rather read or not so it's best to see what feelers are out there and see if you have something that matches what somebody's looking for, but not write something that matches what an editor's looking for.
