It is not a happy story. The suspect was killed by other officers. Nevertheless,

“No police officer should ever lose their job – or have their name dragged through the mud – for choosing to talk to, rather than shoot a fellow citizen,” Mader’s attorney Timothy O’Brien said after the settlement.

I'm glad he got his settlement, but it breaks my heart that a cop would be fired for trying to talk a potential suicide down instead of shooting him, and it breaks my heart that the victim was killed anyway.

And yet people still insist our system isn't broken.
