I've tried this on multiple devices - I keep getting an Error 500 on several AW threads, notably "Next Circle of Hell." Obviously it works for some people, because people are still replying to the thread, but I'm having this issue on laptop as well as phone on different wifi networks, both logged in and logged out. Dumping the cache didn't help.

Please do the two things listed in this post under the heading Everyone Should Do These Two Things.

Can you tell me what OS and browser you're using? I'm not seeing the problem from this end, via the server logs.

I'm also having this problem ever since the forum updates, also with The Next Circle of Hell, Vol. 2 thread.

I'm using a Mac, and the issue happens on both Chrome and Firefox. I tried clearing my cache, etc. This happens on both my home and work laptop.

I think it's related to the fact that AW now logs me out automatically after about an hour, whereas it always used to keep me logged in. If I try navigating to The Next Circle of Hell via my bookmarked URL https://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?306747-The-Next-Circle-of-Hell-Vol-2 while logged me out, I'll get the 500 error. Then I have to log back in and navigate to the thread from Forums > Rejection and Dejection > The Next Circle of Hell.

Sometimes if I try using the URL pasted above even while logged in, I'll still get the error (this isn't 100% replicatable, seems finicky). Being logged out, navigating to that thread, and getting the 500 error is 100% replicatable on my end.

I'd already done this. I just repeated these steps again, and it didn't help.

Logged out
Cleared my all-time cache, cookies, even my history, auto-fill data etc etc.
Closed my browser (as in, completely quit the browser)
Re-opened my browser
Navigated to https://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?306747-The-Next-Circle-of-Hell-Vol-2 (which has https)
500 error

Doesn't matter what browser I use, or which computer. Happy to help, but please don't make me have to re-log into all my accounts all over again. ;-)

When you logged back in, did you click the tiny box on the top right of the log in window that says Remember me?

No.

Also note that I got the 500 error *before* logging in. This never happened before the server update, when I could view any thread without needing to log in.

Here's the thing. You said:

The timeout is tied to a cookie. If you're not logged in, no cookie is set.
Moreover, 30 minutes of inactivity will time you out. This is the setting we've always used.
If you don't check the little box to keep you logged in, you will time out.

But is the desired UX behavior for visitors to get 500 errors upon viewing a thread when they're not logged in? This doesn't seem ideal, and wasn't the way this previously worked. But if that's what you're going for, that's fine, and I'll stop trying to help.

I get the error 500 messages even when I'm logged in with "Remember me."

Also, when I posted this I was on my old laptop, which used Windows 10 and Chrome. Now I am on a brand new laptop, which uses Mac OS X High Sierra and Chrome, and still same problem.
