Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri

I saw this on a list earlier this year of debut epic adult fantasy stories. It was advertised as Mughal India-inspired, which is why I decided to give it a try. It's a stand alone, with an option for a sequel. I really enjoyed this novel, though at some points the pacing was a bit slow.

For me, the standouts this year have been:

Ravencry by Ed McDonald
Priest of Bones by Peter McLean
Marked by Benedict Jacka (Alex Verus #9)
Blood of Assassins by RJ Barker
The Bitter Twins by Jen Williams

The Skaar Invasion (The Fall of Shannara, #2) by Terry Brooks

A great new addition to this series and world.

Lies of the Beholder (Legion #3) by Brandon Sanderson

This is the third of these very short novellas. I enjoyed this one most of all. If you're looking for some modern-sf-mystery, this novella trilogy is a good, short pick.

I listened to audiobooks of The Raven Cycle series. Every character, including villains, were three-dimensional. The twists were surprising (not to toot my own horn, but I usually see twists coming. It was really nice to be surprised). It was heavily influenced by Welsh and neo-pagan mythology, which were a very cool combination.

10/10 would recommend
