"I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.
'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December."

- Oliver Herford, I Heard a Bird Sing

And here we are, almost at the end of 2017. It's been an eventful year the world over - some might say a difficult year - but we have 31 more days to make what we want of it.

As usual, I'll kick things off. I've got a bit of promo left to do on the Book 2 release, and some planning to do for Book 4, and a LOT of writing to do on Book 5. I'm planning on participating in AW's annual Sekrit Solstice Sci-Fi Fantasy Story Swap. I also need to lose some of the flab I gained by stress-eating last month. And of course there's that little thing called Christmas.

[ ] 1. Reach 20k words on Book 5 - currently at 7,646
[ ] 2. Read five books - 0 of 5
[ ] 3. Go for two nature walks - 0 of 2
[ ] 4. Finish final week of promo for Book 2's virtual book tour
[ ] 5. Create 10 graphics for Book 3's January pre-release push
[ ] 6. Decorate the house for the holidays
[ ] 7. Finish Christmas shopping/shipping
[ ] 8. Write/mail Christmas cards
[ ] 9. Write a holiday blog for my publisher
[ ] 10. Exercise (any kind) 30 minutes each day
[ ] 11. Lose five pounds before the end of the month - 0 of 5
[ ] 12. Start work on Sekrit Solstice story

How do you plan to spend your December?

Ooo, is this a thing all year long? This would be a great way to track my monthly goals.

[X] 1. Finish light editing of Double Trouble - DONE!
[_] 2. Prep for Five Losers and/or Incantine - in progress
[X] 3. Do one exercise from Le Guin's Steering the Craft - DONE!
[X] 4. Edit one short story - DONE!
[X] 5. Draw one pencil sketch a week 4/4 - DONE!
[_] 6. Continue the job search - in progress

I really want to do Camp in April, if only for the extra motivation. I'm still not sure which story wants to be written. I'll have to see which one has more mileage in it as I figure out who the characters are and start nudging them for backstory.

My goal for December is to be exhausted.

Well, no. I have to finish packing and move and drive across the country and stuff. I don't have time to be exhausted. But it does mean I'm going to be very light on the writing goals. I'm taking a break from my daily habits (which will quite likely extend into January). There are two stories I want to get submitted this month, but one is ready for submission (I just need to actually send it off) and the other I'm possibly considering some very minor tweaks. Otherwise I will be transcribing stuff (and reading books). Anything else - such as finishing my NaNo novel - will be a bonus. I hope I get it done while it's still fresh in my mind, but I know how busy I will be.

1. Read four books.
2. Submit two stories.
3. Transcribe all the things.
4. Move.
5. Bonus?

Edit: I am taking part in SSSSSSS this year, but I won't start writing until January.

Edit: I am taking part in SSSSSSS this year

So, I tend to Google acronyms I don't recognize in the hopes Google knows what it is. This one gave me a 1973 Horror movie about snakes. I suspect that is not what I was looking for... :tongue

As is typical, I'm carrying over a few things, but not too many this time!

[ ] Finish cleaning office:
[ ] File stack of papers
[ ] Find permanent places for anything I'm keeping
[ ] Give away the "give away" pile
[ ] Finish edits on the E shorty story.
[ ] Finish reading Do Not Say We Have Nothing for book club (first Wednesday, eep!)
[ ] Read All the Missing Girls for January's meeting

Constant Goals:
[47] Write 1K words a day (for 52 weeks).

It's a complicated acronym that has many nicknames here. SSSFFSS, or Sisyphus, or THE GREATEST WRITING EVENT OF THE YEAR, The SEKRIT SOLSTICE SCI-FI-FANTASY STORY SWAP. Find it in your local Sci-Fi Fantasy forum. :p

I'mma pull together my list momentarily.

December's To Dos:
[ ] Beta read latest Beta Swap beta
[ ] Submit at least 1 short story a week (0/4)
[ ] Participate in the Countdown to 2018 Flash Fiction Challenge (0/31)
[ ] Plot SSSFFSS prompt
[ ] Start video game streaming channel
-----[ ] Start posting on the proper forums
-----[ ] Double check streaming programs and hardware
-----[ ] Play something for God's sake you've been putting this off since Sept 2016.

Neat! Thanks for starting it. :)

[ ] Start video game streaming channel

Ooo, what games will you be streaming? This has become so popular. Last night a friend was pretty much begging me to follow his team's Monster Hunter XX stream. But aside from watching speedruns to learn new techniques, I've never been into watching other people play games.

I'm planning on starting with Legend of Zelda, the original. I didn't start console gaming until the SNES, and then I pretty much stuck to platformers like Aladdin and other tv/movie franchise games. The non-franchise games I had were pure happenstance (Donkey Kong Country came with the system, Mario...well, everyone knows Mario, Kirby was the only thing available at a rental place...) so I ended up missing a ton of games in the NES and SNES eras. Add on the fact that my husband and I have pretty good banter while gaming (IMO), I figure why not embarrass myself publicly? :p

OMG that sounds like so much fun. I played Zelda on the NES, but it was always a rental and I never got a chance to finish it. Fast-forward *cough* too-many-years and a virtual console later, I tried again, but it just wasn't fun. Good luck with your project! Drop a link somewhere when it's ready. It'd be entertaining to watch someone play those old games.

Will do! The best place to track me would be twitter (I'll post when I'm about to start) or following on my Twitch Channel here. Should send an email when I go live. :)

[ ] Survive
[ ] Finish my draft
[ ] Spend lovely time with my gf & doggo
[ ] Maybe get back into Skyrim
[ ] Survive

[ ] Sekret Solstice :hooray:

Also, Maggie, if you got the itch, I would highly recommend checking the Zelda Classic website. Most fanmade Zelda games are so-so, but there are some real gems. The Lost Isle and anything else by DarkFlameWolf is highly worth playing.

I'm keeping it simple this month, so hopefully I'll actually be able to finish everything:

[ ] Complete all study tasks for December (Weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of term).
[ ] Read 5 books (must include at least 1 nonfiction).
[ ] Write 30k of my revived WIP.

My goal for December is to be exhausted.

Sounds about right ;) December is looking to be very difficult for me in terms of goals, but here goes:

[ ] Read 4 books (two challenges).
[ ] Write two blog posts.
[ ] Complete edit on two chapters of novel.
[ ] Lose 2 kilos.
[ ] Get through Christmas (including everything that comes before it).

I'm also doing SSSFFSS, but I doubt I'll write anything for that until Jan.

Also, I
caved to peer pressure and changed my layout for this post this month.

SaveSave

I fought the change myself, arikdiver, but there's something so tidy about the layout, and so satisfying about putting the "x" in the box. And I'm glad to see others who are making a preemptive strike at weight loss now, instead of waiting until after the damage of the holidays.

Mind if I join in? I need something to make me accountable.

So, my goals for December.

[ ] finish beta read
[ ] finish edits on long-ass story (longest story I've written in years)
[ ] make a pavlova for the very first time
[ ] finish crocheted blanket for #1 son
[ ] 30 minutes of walking/activity every day

I'm also participating in sisyfus... and eagerly looking forward to getting a prompt to write on!

Welcome, Jaymz! I'm eager to hear about your pavlova experiment in particular. I've never attempted one.

Hello! Starting a little late this month, as other non-writing-related things held me back  Here's to hoping I can complete these!

[ ] Complete at least 3 books for research + browse one giant one
[ ] Finish editing what I have for novella
[ ] Finish short story for new MS
[ ] Shift sleep schedule from 12-7am to 10pm-5am

Don't know if I will ever be able to achieve the last one, but we shall see.

Also, re: sisyphus, in the beginning of this year I'd planned to join the 2017-2018's sisyphus (wow, this nickname sure is tough to type. I keep tripping over the last y. Usually just went by Sekrit, but I'm not sure if anyone calls it that here), but now with so much to do, I guess I will be holding it off for another year :( Can't wait to see what comes out from those crazy prompts though!

How's everyone doing on goals so far?

I finished my first one. Yay! I'm sad that I have to step away from my NaNo novel -- I mean really, truly, honest-to-goodness stop gazing at it lovingly and leave it alone. Haha. I took two days away from prep and thought "oh no, my motivation is gone" only to open the file and bingo, got a new idea. My characters are going to be in for a rough ride. :D
