I've edited six anthologies, but my seventh has introduced a new experience. The open call went out a week ago, and I already have 16 or so submissions. The deadline isn't until March 1st.
Should I make those who submitted so early still wait until after the deadline before deciding who is in?
The reason I hesitate to make them wait is that the story will be sitting in my slush pile for months (March 1st + the time it takes me to read and decide all subs). That's time they could be spending sending that story elsewhere. I feel a little bad locking their stories in a vault, making them wait that long and denying them the ability to try and sell it elsewhere in the interim.
(This is the reason I am sympathetic to simultaneous submissions).
