Best thing you've learned since you began writing (erotica)?

I am a new author. Still editing and adding to my first erotic short, and setting up author related stuff - pen name, blog, etc

But I want to pick everyone's brain here :)

What is the biggest thing you've learned since you started earning money from your erotica work? (Or since you started writing in general).

Thanks!

I'm old enough to remember when Comedy Central had hour after hour of stand-up comedy. A comedian, Richard Jeni, had a joke about the internet and porn. He'd type in "sex with a goat" and the search engine would suggest that to limit the number of hits, he should specify the breed of goat.

Which is funny and also illustrates what I learned. No matter how unconventional your sexual interests or activities may be, there are thousands of readers who are also interested in them. Before the internet, they had trouble finding one another, but now not only are there communities of like-minded individuals and meet-up sites where they can get together online and/or in real life, but there are also lots of stories and novels written expressly for their interests.

The other thing I've learned is that while some people believe the bar for quality is set lower for erotic fiction than in many other genres, the best-written material is far more likely to find paying customers, whether it's commercially or self published. The days of slapping together something and selling it are gone.

Maryn, bidding them good riddance

This is a big one right here. It's so easy for readers to just browse a free fiction website and find tons of poorly written smut. You want to produce quality work that readers can really grasp and want more of.

Another lesson I learned is the story is not just about the sex. Whether you're writing erotica or erotic fiction (romance?), it's the experience the characters have together, sexual or not, that really drives the story.

But then you have those kinds of readers that say, "There's not enough sex in this book." *bitch, please. There's already three scenes in that 50k book!* :D

I learned quite a bit about writing close POV by writing erotic romance.

Point me in that direction.

You need to RTFM, where M&J is one choice of FM. It's also illustrated on Wikipedia but not linked from the positions page… I’ll edit this later when I’m at a desktop (or around other people).

I am curious about this position too. A bit confused but I'm always trying to learn more.
