This is my first day as a member. I will be retiring from 44 years in pastoral ministry at the end of the year. One of my first priorities in retirement is to finally finish my first novel, a historical fiction work about the 1914 Christmas truce in Flanders. 37,522 words written and about that many more to go. It's my first attempt at writing fiction since I turned in my last spelling story in Mrs. Langhauser's 4th grade class many years ago. Fools rush in...

So I'm hoping to learn from those who have gone before me.

Welcome from another newbie. Your novel sounds really interesting. That was a touching moment in WWI. Good luck with the rest of the book!

Exciting! Kudu's to you for taking on such a challenge :) I absolutely love historical fiction and admire anyone who can write it - so best of luck. Perhaps you'll share some for review on this website (I'm new here too and have no idea where that would be - but I know it's gotta be somewhere!)

FLANDERS !! As you can probably see from my excitement, I am from Flanders. Obviously, I wasn't born yet in 1914, but if you need any inside-Flanders tips just let me know and I'd be happy to help!

I'm the one who is excited! I will definitely be picking your brain for local insights. I've brazenly tackled writing about a place I've never seen. Closest I've ever been to Belgium is London. Most of the action in my novel is set in the trenches around St. Yvon and Ploegsteert. As a history major long ago and a life-long student of history, it is important to me to get the details right. While my work is fiction, it is firmly rooted in historical fact. My goal is to write a compelling tale that would not insult a true WW1 historian--or a Belgian!

Happy retirement, Shepherd. I'm certainly enjoying my time off after a long working life. :greenie

My hometown (Big Timber, Montana) loves shepherds.

Big Timber, Montana. I haven't passed through there since... let's see... the summer of 1975 en route to Missoula.

My sister and one of my three brothers live in Missoula. We're all ex-sheepherders from Big Twig.

:welcome:!
