Hello all. This is not only my first foray into a writing forum, but pretty much any forum. I have been writing on and off since High School but put it aside as I "got a real job." Now I am nearing my fiftieth revolution (as my brother-in-law would say) and, with my career fairly well set, my two children in college, I have been bitten once again by the writing bug. Only this time I want to get serious about it. I am looking for some guidance from those who have been doing this longer, (from a volume of writing standpoint, that is nearly everyone) or has studied the subject more. I look forward to many heathy debates and conversations.

Welcome, Bill  A lot of us had to get through the demands of real life for many years before dessert was served. Glad you now have time to follow a dream. Take some time exploring AW. The resources on here are off the chart.

I am curious about the "Old Green Guy" title. It is conservationist, green with envy, Kermit the Frog, or something else?

Green would be my simple reference to my lack of experience, no tree hugging (too many splinters), Wicked witch references (too much cackling), or unnatural affinity to female pigs with fake French accents. This is more of a John Wayne reference from Eldorado: "Just wait a minute JP, he's a little green, the fellow you're after has a bad leg." Please insert your own mental JW drawl.

I gotcha - "greenhorn" in the cowboy sense.

Welcome to AW. You've got a starfleet insignia. I'm compelled to give you a thumbs up. Probably means you have an interest in science fiction and fantasy. You're in luck, we've got a sub-forum for that, and the nerd discussion there gets pretty in-depth.
