There's a ton of great small press horror being published right now. Genre's strong as ever.
But I think zombies are definitely becoming a harder sell, as they've been in the spotlight for so long. If you're looking for solid modern horror with mainstream appeal I'd recommend exploring the works of Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Stephen Graham Jones and Nick Cutter.
